The pressure to be a great cat parent, especially when scrolling through endless posts on social media, can be overwhelming. With so much conflicting information out there, it’s easy to feel like we’re never doing enough or that we're even doing things wrong. But what does it really mean to be a great cat parent?
Here’s what our certified cat trainer and behaviour expert has to say:
- You have at least three enrichment sessions a day, rotating through a play session, training session, and setting up puzzle feeders.
- You meet your cat’s grooming requirements, like claw clipping and brushing (these vary per cat!).
- You provide your cat with the highest quality diet that stays within your budget.
- You feed your cat every meal from clean dishes, refresh water daily, and clean water bowls at least every other day.
- You give your cat options to perform natural behaviours like scratching (posts), observing their world (windows), climbing (cat trees), and hiding (beds and cubbies).
- You clean your litter boxes daily, sometimes twice a day, depending on how many cats live with you.
- You respect your cat’s boundaries and foster trust, happiness, and security every day.
- You are always open to learning more about proper cat care and to admitting any mistakes you may make, while finding ways to correct them.
