The Why of Behaviours

The Why of Behaviours

We know what behaviours are, we know what behaviours look like, but it’s important to understand why behaviours happen. Why do they occur, and what is their purpose?

Behaviours are responses to the environment and a way for our cats to communicate with us and other animals around them. Cats use behaviours to self-soothe and manage their surroundings—they’re not personal attacks on us or our environment!

Undesirable behaviours are usually rooted in something making your cat feel insecure or uncomfortable, and they are using the tools they have to regain that sense of security.

When you’re looking to help your kitty with an undesirable behaviour, consider what they are trying to tell you they need in those moments. Provide positive solutions to decrease their stress and discomfort. This gives your kitty the freedom to express their emotions in healthier, more appropriate ways.
