Stopping “Bad” Cat Behaviours Before They Start

Stopping “Bad” Cat Behaviours Before They Start

When cats act out, many of us label it as “bad” behaviour. And while sometimes it does feel like defiance, cats’ behaviours aren’t meant to spite us. Unwanted behaviours happen because one or more of their needs aren’t being met.

Cats are intelligent, curious, and active beings. They need to explore, sniff, run, jump, climb, use their brains, and hunt. When their home doesn’t nurture these natural behaviours, cats will find their own ways to meet their needs, and over time, those unmet needs often show up as behaviours we don’t enjoy living with.

This is why being proactive with your cat’s daily care and enrichment is so important. Giving your cat what they need saves you frustration and helps your cat thrive, not just cope.

So, what does proactive care include?

  • Daily Play: Use interactive toys, like wand toys, to play with your cat every day.
  • Training Time: Have short training sessions (ideally daily) for mental stimulation and to strengthen your bond.
  • Brain Games: Rotate in puzzle feeders, foraging boxes, or treasure hunts to keep their minds active.
  • Vertical & Cozy Spaces: Offer cat trees, shelves, and hideaways that are easy to access and safe.
  • Quality Nutrition: Feed high-protein, moisture-rich meals on a schedule in clean dishes.
  • Plenty of Water: Place multiple water sources around your home to encourage hydration.
  • Litter Box Care: Provide large, multiple litter boxes that are scooped at least once daily.
  • Grooming & Dental Care: Make brushing and dental care part of your routine.
  • Structured Affection & Time Together: Set aside quality time and don’t leave your cat alone for long stretches.

It can feel like a lot of work adding in this care, but take it one step at a time, and you’ll be surprised by how easily it all fits into your own routine. It is truly an investment towards you and your cats living your best lives together.
