A Powerful Way to Tell Your Cat "I Love You"

A Powerful Way to Tell Your Cat

There are countless ways to show our cats we love them- treats, petting, snuggles, playtime, and more -but one of the most powerful ways to express true love and respect is by listening when they tell us 'No'. Cats have boundaries, and they deserve to be heard. Just like us, they communicate their likes and dislikes in many ways. Learning to recognize and respect your cat’s “No” not only strengthens your bond but also lays the groundwork for trust in every part of their life.

Ignoring those signals can lead to anxious, fearful, or even aggressive cats. On the flip side, when you acknowledge your cat’s communication, especially when it’s a firm “no thanks”, you’re helping them feel safe, confident, and comfortable. And that makes even the not-so-fun stuff (like nail trims or carrier entry) a little easier on both of you.

So, what does a “No” look like? It might be subtle, like a tail flick, looking away, lip licking, or tucked whiskers. Or it might be more obvious, like a warning nip, growl, or hiss. All of these, no matter how “dramatic” we humans might unfairly call them, are meaningful and important forms of communication.

When your cat says no:

• Listen. Stop what you’re doing and give them some space.

• Respect. If it’s optional, let it go.

• Work with it. If it has to happen, find a new way to make it more enjoyable (or at least more tolerable) for them.
